Teens and Children's Power Wheelchair Range

A mobility solution that grows with them

When it comes to a children’s electric wheelchair, the chair should fit the child now and continue to adapt as they grow, whether you are a parent, carer or healthcare professional choosing a powerchair for a child or teenager. The right setup should support health, comfort and freedom over time, because the right powered wheelchair affects mobility, posture, confidence and day-to-day development as much as transport. This may mean considering full power functions that they may not need yet, but will require as the child grows. In addition, you want a chair that has adaptable seat width, seat depth, backrest height, length extension, and foot plate height are important functionalities to consider, with seating that can be adjusted for the perfect level of support and fit. You may also want to consider not just user functionality but also attendant assistance control features to make life easier for their carer too. Depending on motor skills, specialised control systems may also be needed, and controlled speeds can help children build confidence quickly. Crash-tested options are also important when specifying a paediatric powered wheelchair. Below, we explore key types, leading brands, bespoke fitting options, and common questions, including costs and the difference between a powerchair and an electric wheelchair, so you can choose a chair that helps a child explore, interact and build independence and social engagement.

An extensive range of children’s wheelchairs and powerchairs

We are proud to stock some of the best brands that have dedicated kids and teen powerchair ranges. These include Karma Mobility, Inacare, Otto Bock, Quantum Rehab, Sunrise Medical, and many more, with product selection that can suit different ages and activity levels. All of the models are manufactured to very high exacting standards of quality and functionality. We can provide lightweight and folding models for use indoors, where a tight turning radius is especially important, as well as more rugged powerchairs for outdoor usage, where larger wheels, suspension and at least 2 inches of ground clearance can help. Some wheel drive layouts, including mid wheel, are ideal for different environments, and gyro features may help maintain control over uneven ground. The Zippie Q300 M Mini Kids is one flagship paediatric powerchair, while Karma’s Leon F Kameleon is designed for ages 3 to 12 years. Having such a wide range of makes and models means we can supply you with just the right powerchair for your child, with the right place in daily life and weight capacity checked carefully, including around 15% margin for stability.

A bespoke service

Working with families and clients to find just the right chair is just the start of our service. We fully undertake a rigorous assessment, which can take place at home or school, where we measure every detail and angle that makes for a comfortable position for your child and then configure the chair accordingly, involving occupational therapists where appropriate. We also look at accessories that may be required, so you receive a unique, fully equipped, powerful paediatric package and broader mobility equipment that will last. We can also offer advice on funding routes, including loan-based options for younger children. Some children usually need to be at least 3 years old for funding, while loan schemes such as Wizzybug from Designability, loaned free of charge, and powered wheelchair support from Whizz-Kidz may help earlier or provide interim access. In addition, we offer a wide range of care and maintenance services so we can not only ensure optimum performance of the powerchair but also modify it further as your child grows. Wizzybug applications are assessed by Occupational Therapists, and children can typically keep the chair until they outgrow it.

Children’s Wheelchairs and Power wheelchair FAQs (including weight capacity)

How much is a child’s electric wheelchair or electric wheelchairs?

This can vary enormously depending on whether you are looking for a standard electric wheelchair or for a more feature-rich power wheelchair, as mentioned below. Price also depends on the child’s age, size, seating needs and whether the chair is intended for occasional or all-day use over time. At the younger end, Wizzybug is for children under 5 weighing up to 20 kg, while the Explorer Mini is designed for children aged 12 to 36 months.

What is the difference between a power chair, powered wheelchair, and a power wheelchair?

The two terms are often used interchangeably. However, a power chair or powered wheelchair often has more powered functionality features beyond just motion. It may include a wide range of powered functions, like tilt, recline, power leg rest and full standing functionalities, and advanced models may also offer front wheel drive options alongside compact configurations for different environments. They often also have a more compact design to address tight access and are often more robust and considerably heavier than standard electric wheelchairs. Quantum’s Kozmo, for example, offers adjustable seating for a perfect fit.
