Powerchair FAQs
How many years does a power chair last?
This can vary considerably depending on the maintenance and care the power chair is given. Where and how a powerchair is used also plays its part, for instance greater uasge across rugged terrain may shorten its life. Other factors, for instance folding powerchairs may have more stress put on joints can also affect the longevity of powered wheelchairs. However, as a general rule your powerchair can look to last between 5-15 years.
What is the disadvantage of a power wheelchair?
Being more expensive than traditional electric wheelchairs is of course a downside. Other negatives is the sheer weight and bulk can make them difficult to transport. Their greater reliance on electrical systems can also mean that they can be more prone to electrical faults. Finally, many models inability to address outdoor situations, like crossing rough terrain can limit their accessibility.
What is the difference between a power chair and a power wheelchair?
This is often quite a complex question since electric wheelchairs and powerchairs are often used as interchangeable terms. In some respects, any electric wheelchair is a powerchair in the respect that it relies on electric power for it’s motion. However, powerchairs are frequently more dependent on electrical functions than purely just motion. This may include powered seating as well as tilt in space mechanisms or elevating seats for standing capabilities.
How do I choose a power chair?
Hopefully, if you have read this page, you will see that choosing a powerchair is hugely dependent on your requirements and circumstances. This will impact on the a wide range of features and characteristics you want from your powerchair. This can include drive type (see below), chair size, comfort, seating adjustability, hand controls, battery life, indoor or outdoor usage, portability and transportability. With such a wide range of factors, we would highly recommend using a mobility specialist with a vast experience in specifying and bespoking powerchairs.
What are the three types of power wheelchairs?
This can refer to two different types of categorisation. It can refer to the usage a powerchair has been designed for eg travel/portable, full-size and heavy duty. However, it can also refer to the drive type that a power chair uses eg rear wheel drive, mid-wheel drive and front wheel drive. Each of these drive types can have different handling characteristics to suit specific environments and user preferences.
